Sometimes cybersecurity slip-ups come from the places you’d least expect — like the very tools meant to keep you safe. Recently, over 1,700 sensitive documents accidentally ended up in the public domain, all thanks to a chain reaction involving Microsoft Defender and a popular online malware analysis tool called ANY.RUN.
The Domino Effect of Microsoft & ANY.RUN
For a quick refresher, ANY.RUN is a platform where you can safely open shady files or links without wrecking your own computer. Here’s where things got messy: Microsoft Defender mistakenly flagged legitimate Adobe Acrobat Cloud links as dangerous. Naturally, people panicked. Thinking they had malware on their hands, they rushed to upload these Adobe files to ANY.RUN to check if they were infected.
The problem is that if you’re on ANY.RUN’s free plan: whatever you upload becomes public. Many users didn’t realise this, or just didn’t think about it in the chaos, and a flood of corporate documents ended up publicly viewable. We’re talking sensitive info from hundreds of companies.
ANY.RUN says they moved quickly to make all these uploads private once they noticed the problem. Still, they’re urging users to switch to a paid plan if they’re dealing with anything sensitive or work-related — free accounts just don’t offer the same privacy protections.
Meanwhile, frustration has been bubbling up across the cybersecurity world. People aren’t just upset about the leaks — they’re also calling out ANY.RUN for what they feel is confusing messaging. Even on Reddit, users pointed out that the platform’s homepage seemed to promise private uploads to free account holders, which added to the misunderstandings.
At the end of the day, this whole situation is a massive reminder: always double-check the privacy settings of any tool you use for handling sensitive files. And if you’re even a little unsure? Best not to upload confidential stuff to public platforms at all.
