Cyber security – 7 tips to keep your devices safe

There are so many ways to have a strong Cyber security against cybercriminals in your business. This is a continuous battle because hackers always find new and different ways to attack our businesses.

We talked with Tony, one of our top engineers and asked him for tips and tricks to stay safe and protect our businesses.

  1. Ensure you always have an up to date antivirus and antimalware program running. Keeping your software up to date is important because usually, the developers will issue a patch whenever a breach is found.
  2. Make sure you have a secure password and never write it down. Try to make your passwords memorable, but not obvious. So, don’t use your birthday or your spouse’s birthday. Instead, go with a colour, an animal, but not your pet’s name and add some numbers. For example: GreenBear336$. Also, remember not to use the same password on all your accounts. That minimises the possibility of having to change all your passwords and, the possibility of having multiple accounts breached.
  3. Always have a password over 9 characters and use a mixture of uppercase, lowercase, numbers and special characters.
  4. Be aware of fake/spam emails, never open an email if you aren’t expecting it or you don’t know the sender. If you are unsure about an email get it checked by IT.
  5. Don’t click on links or open attachments in fake/spam emails.
  6. Never open important sites, like internet banking when you are on a guest Wi-Fi, or free Wi-Fi, you never know who might be watching the traffic and gain access to your information.
  7. Never leave your devices unattended and always keep them password protected.

Remember, you can never be completely secured from cyber attacks, but if you follow some simple rules, you can be fairly sure your data is protected.
