We recently decided to blog about Derby’s history of IT advancement. Therefore, why don’t we take a look at another great contributor to the UK’s innovation in IT?

In this blog, we will delve into the history of Bristol’s IT advancements. Additionally, we’ll explore the key milestones that have contributed to its thriving tech ecosystem.

Bristol is commonly known for its stunning architecture and vibrant culture. However, it is not just known for its picturesque views and cultural heritage; Bristol has also been at the forefront of advancements in the field of information technology.

Over the years, the city has played a pivotal role in fostering innovation and establishing itself as a technology and digital innovation hub.

A blast back to the past

Bristol’s IT advancement journey can be traced back to the early days of computing. In the 1940s, Bristol University became one of the first institutions in the UK to develop its own computer.

This was known as the “Bristol Computing Machine.” This early foray into computing set the stage for the city’s future contributions to the field.

If you wanted an idea of what this looked like, here is a similar computer model made by the University of Manchester in 1948 that was photographed.

It looks pretty complicated, right? That’s because it was, just to function in basic mathematics, the computer required 25 kilowatts in power consumption.

This is quite a mind-blowing statement when comparing this to now, where we all complain if our PCs don’t load a webpage in a few seconds.

Moving forwards, Bristol continued to make significant strides. In the 1960s, the University of Bristol established the Computer Science Department.

This played a crucial role in the development of computer science education and research in the region. The department contributed to the growth of Bristol’s IT industry by producing skilled graduates.

Furthermore, the late 20th century witnessed a significant increase in IT advancement. A wave of technology companies, start-ups, and research institutions began to flourish, fuelling economic growth and innovation.

In 1973, the city became the home of the first international connection to the precursor of the modern internet, known as the ARPANET.

Researchers at the University of Bristol successfully connected with their counterparts at the University of California, marking a pivotal moment in the history of global communication.

On the other hand, a great example of a start-up that arrived a bit later in the 1980s is Hewlett Packard (Commonly known as HP) which established a major research and development facility in the city.

HP set up several research facilities across the UK. However, this one, in particular, had a primary goal of researching ways to improve the Cyber security of their hardware.

Here we are today

Now we reach the here and now, where Bristol has been at the forefront of the digital and creative industries. The city hosts creative professionals, entrepreneurs, and start-ups. Specializing in fields such as digital media, gaming, animation, and virtual reality.

An example of a start-up… is us! We opened up our Bristol IT branch, which is located in Almondsbury, the Quadrant, in July 2021. Expanding our IT Support and IT Services to the Bristol area.

Bristol’s success in IT can also be attributed to its presence of world-class educational institutions, research centres, and industry leaders.

Organizations like the Bristol Robotics Laboratory, the Bristol and Bath Science Park, and the Engine Shed are all great examples of this.

Furthermore, looking to the future, we can see even more promise for Bristol’s IT advancement. For example, the University of Bristol has recently announced it will host the new Research Institute for Sociotechnical Cyber Security (RISCS). We have made a blog on this in itself, if you are interested, you can read it here.
