I’m sure by now you’ve seen the controversial ban proposal, ironically you probably did so from a TikTok.
So, here’s the latest: the US Senate just gave a thumbs-up to a move that could kick TikTok, everyone’s favourite short video app, out of the United States. If its parent company, ByteDance, doesn’t sell off the app within the next nine months to a year, it’s sayonara, TikTok!
I know the first question you may have is… WHY?! Well, the U.S. Congress are concerned about the possibility of China getting its hands on Americans’ data through the app.
Senator Marco Rubio, who’s on the U.S Intelligence Committee, didn’t hold back, saying, “Letting the Chinese Communist party control such a popular American app for so long was a major mistake.” As you can see, they aren’t pulling punches when it comes to accusations.
But what does China have to say about all this? Well, they’re not too pleased. They’ve been vocal about their opposition to this move since the House passed a similar bill earlier.
You might’ve actually seen for yourself, that TikTok’s CEO, Mr Shou, has made several videos on the platform, discussing this. You may also notice as well, that many users who, funnily enough, are American, defend TikTok against their congress…. talk about controversy!
It’s clear that a massive legal battle is under wraps here, and that both sides will be gearing up to fight this bill, citing their First Amendment rights.
If ByteDance doesn’t play ball, big tech companies like Apple and Google won’t be able to offer TikTok anymore. And this bill doesn’t stop there—it gives the White House the power to take on other foreign-owned apps they see as threats to security.
There’s quite a lot of **sensitive** controversy and conspiracy here, and I would love to discuss it but that might be a little TOO controversial for this blog.
“Shockingly”, not everyone’s cheering. Some are worried this bill gives the government too much power and could stomp all over people’s freedom of speech. Plus, they’re saying ByteDance probably won’t be able to sell TikTok off in time anyway.
So, what’s the bottom line? Well, it looks like we’re in for a wild ride. This law could become a major talking point in the upcoming presidential campaign, with Trump already rallying young voters against a potential TikTok ban. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how this all pans out.
